Below, I’m presenting tips and codes to transfer a library from EndNote to Excel using an (EndNote) Output Style File.
Before using the code, you should note that only the following reference types* will be correctly exported: journal articles, book, book section, edited book, conference proceedings, report, thesis, blog post, electronic article, web page, generic.
* As defined in EndNote
How to transfer from EndNote to Excel
Exporting from EndNote
- Download the Output Style File (*.ENS) here
- In EndNote, open the library you wish to export to Excel
- In your downloads folder, open the ENS file you downloaded. It will open it as a style to edit in EndNote
- Save it using the name “EndNote to Excel” (you can change it, just remember it!)
- Back in your library, in Bibliographic Output Style
- Find “EndNote to Excel” and click “Choose”
- Select all the references you wish to export to Excel
- In “File”, click on “Export…”
- Select “Text File (*.txt)” as save type and “EndNote to Excel” as Output style
- Save and note the location of the new TXT file.
Import in Excel
- In Excel, on a new spreadsheet, import the library using the “From Text” functionality (or “Import from text file” in earlier Excel versions). It will open the Text Import Wizard
- Choose “Delimited”, click “Next”
- Check only “Tab”, click “Next”
- The default settings should be “General”, click “Next”
- Confirm where you want the data to be added and Voilà !
